Y 06I001 - Pavilion DR
Moerbeke (BE), 2024 - in progress
This project is a careful renovation of a historic hunting pavilion set within a protected natural reserve—a rare opportunity to create a design that honors its heritage while fully engaging with the surrounding ecosystem. From the outset, nature guided every choice: the project seeks to preserve and enhance the existing environment, rather than impose upon it. Sustainability is embedded in both materiality and spatial strategy. The façade is clad in reclaimed wood, allowing the building to age gracefully while reducing its ecological footprint. A thatched roof not only insulates naturally but also encourages biodiversity. The roof itself is punctuated with openings that invite the woodland inside, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior. The pavilion’s structure accommodates wildlife: dedicated nesting and roosting spaces provide shelter for protected species, seamlessly integrated into the architectural composition. Every intervention was carefully considered to minimize impact, from low-impact construction methods to the preservation of existing elements.
